Also traditionally known as Stir-up Sunday, from the Prayer Book Collect translated from Latin by Cranmer, and the making of Christmas puddings, the last Sunday before Advent is a celebration of Christ the King, Jesus as the just ruler over all the Universe.

Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sunday 24th November 2019, we had Fr Nigel Guthrie as Celebrant & Preacher at our 11am Sung Mass. Hymns: 443: 345: 433(omit *) . Setting: Missa Aeterna Christi Munera, by Palestrina.  Motet: Lift up your heads O ye gates, by Mathias.

In 2016, on 20th November, we were delighted to welcome Bishop Martin Shaw to our 10.45am Sung Mass to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation on Amy Down.  The Mass Setting was Casciolini in A minor, and after Communion we sang that great 4th century Credal Hymn, Te Deum Laudamus, We Praise Thee O God, set to music by the American composer, Horatio Parker.

In 2015, falling on 22nd November, also St Cecilia’s Day, Patron Saint of Church Musicians, the Mass Setting was the suitably majestic Mass in C&F by Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) and the Motet “Above All Praise and All Majesty” by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-47).

In 2014, the Mass Setting was by Harold Darke in E.  The Motet by Sir John Stainer was the boisterous “I saw the Lord, high and lifted up, and his train filled the Temple.” Words from Isaiah 6:1-4 are joined with a verse of Ave, colenda Trinitas, an anonymous 11th century Latin hymn.
