On Sunday 5th July at 5pm, the Choir of St Michael’s has been invited to sing Evensong at St Martin’s Church in Exeter Cathedral Close as they celebrate the 950th Anniversary of this ancient city centre place of worship, now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Teas will be served to the congregation from 4pm outside the church.

The Preacher will be the Rt Revd Robert Atwell, Bishop of Exeter.

This being such a special occasion, it will replace our normal 1st Sunday Evensong at St Michael’s.

While the current structure dates mainly from the 15th century, the chancel arch is thought to be the oldest part of the building, and may date from the previous church on the site which was consecrated on 6 July 1065 by Bishop Leofric. There are traces of Anglo-Saxon long-and-short work high in the north-east corner of the nave.

Hymns for the service are Christ is made the sure foundation, Jesus where’er thy people meet, Now thank we all our God. NEH 205, 390, 413.

As well as these hymns, music will include Responses by Tallis, Psalm 27 vv1-16, Canticles by Weelkes, and the Anthem “Locus iste a Deo factus est” by Bruckner.
