Sunday 28th February, of course there is Sung Mass at St Michael’s at 10.45am with the full Merbecke from his Praier Booke Noted of 1550, and Panis Angelicus arranged by our own Dr Nigel Browne as Motet. Our visiting clergy will be from Heavitree Parish.
But this entry is also to advertise the opportunity to hear one of Exeter Bach Society’s liturgical performances of a Bach Cantata in Exeter Cathedral at 6pm.
Jesu, nun sei gepreiset (Jesus, now be praised), BWV 41, by Johann Sebastian Bach is a chorale cantata composed in Leipzig for New Year’s Day and first performed on 1 January 1725. It is based on a hymn by Johannes Hermann (1591). The cantata in six movements has opening choir chorus, SATB solos and closing chorale, and is scored for three trumpets, timpani, three oboes, two violins, viola, violoncello piccolo da spalla and basso continuo.
The service (which is free) is followed by a ticketed recital (see below) by violinist Emmanuel Bach (accompanied by pianist Jenny Stern) at 7.15pm. This mother and son duo of international renown will perform works by Bach and others.
