Sunday 2nd August, we welcome Erika Borley as new Director of Music at St Michael’s.
After the rich diet of Victorian and 20th century fare included in our tour to Germany, we cleanse our musical palette today with 16th century Composers of mainly a cappella pieces at both Sung Mass and Choral Evensong & Benediction.
For Solemn Sung Mass at 10.45am, the Setting is Missa “O quam gloriosum” by Tomás Luis de Victoria (c.1548-1611) and the Communion Motet “Ave verum corpus” by William Byrd (c.1540–1623).
Choral Evensong at 6pm will feature Byrd’s Preces & Responses, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis Canticles in Fauxbourdon by Thomas Morley (c1557-1602) and the ancient Compline Hymn “Te lucis ante terminum” set by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) as Anthem.
Psalm 88. Domine Deus. O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee : O let my prayer enter into thy presence, incline thine ear unto my calling.
Office Hymn 248 (ii) : O strength and stay, and St Thomas Aquinas’ Benediction Hymns 269 & 268: O salutaris hostia & Tantum ergo to the familiar Plainsong. After Benediction, the choir processes out singing Psalm 117.
