Service of Nine Lessons & Carols

Hosted by: St Michael's Church & Choir

A traditional service of 9 Lessons & Carols at 7.30pm on Thursday 17th December.

This service of Hymns, Carols and Readings tells the great story from Adam & Eve to Mary, Joseph and Jesus, the Shepherds and the Wise Men. It has been made famous by the radio broadcasts from King’s College Cambridge since 1928, but it was first devised by E.W. Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, for use in the wooden shed, which served as his Cathedral in Truro, on Christmas Eve 1880. But he got his idea from a pre-Reformation Sarum (Salisbury) Usage of having 9 Readings each with a sung Antiphon on major Saints Days.

Seasonal Refreshments will be served afterwards.

This year’s music will include:-

  • Ord – Adam lay ybounden, bounden in a bond (15th C words)
  • Handel – For unto us a child is born (from Messiah)
  • arr. Willcocks – Angelus ad Virginem (13th C words & tune)
  • Foster – While shepherds watched (18th C tune)
 In 2014 the Carols were:-

Once in royal David’s city
The truth from above – Vaughan Williams
Away in a manger
Es ist ein Rös entsprungen – Praetorius
O little town of Bethlehem
Lullay, my liking – Lawson
It came upon the midnight clear
While shepherds watched – Tate
As with gladness men of old
O come all ye faithful
